The Bench Project is committed to improving everyday transit by making bus stops more comfortable, accessible, and welcoming for the people who use them. We believe that small, thoughtful interventions like benches can make a meaningful difference for riders, especially older adults, people with disabilities, parents, and workers navigating long or difficult trips. Through careful analysis of ridership patterns, surrounding environments, and community context, we identify locations where seating can have the greatest impact. This project represents a first step toward creating transit spaces that better support dignity, comfort, and ease of movement for all.
In 2026, our team is focused on moving from planning to implementation by coordinating with municipalities, property owners, and vendors to support bench installation and maintenance.
Many bus stops lack enough clear space to safely install a bench. Narrow sidewalks, nearby utilities, or limited right-of-way can restrict where seating is possible without affecting pedestrian access or accessibility.
Responsibility for bus stop amenities is often shared between transit agencies, municipalities, and property owners. Unclear ownership and long-term maintenance expectations can slow or prevent bench installation.
In many suburban communities, where car use is the norm, the needs of people who rely on transit are often less visible. This can lead to benches being primarily associated with concerns like loitering, rather than as basic infrastructure that supports mobility, dignity, and access.
